Windows 98 Plus For Windows 7 by AnsonSterling Windows 98 Plus For Windows 7 by AnsonSterling
Well guys, for the people that missed the old Windows 98 Plus! themes, I got these from my old Windows 98 and tried it on Windows 7. Extremely surpising that it worked. Extract the .zip folder and I've learned that you must keep the Plus! folder on the desktop for it to run properly. Otherwise, runs perfectly. Curently running the Nature theme :)

I went to download your registry fix zip and chrome said it was malicious and it would not download.

It's because it's an archive and it is so small, which is common for fake, malicious programs. You can check the .reg inside yourself for what keys it modifies. That's all that's in there, a .reg inside a zip. Hence the filesize.

Oh man, this is the best ever. This one little feature made be so stupidly happy back in the day. If you don't mind me asking, what about the other themes? I remember there being a bunch more, like Science Fiction & Cathy & such. Will you upload those, too?
Hermitt43 Featured By Owner Edited Sep 8, 2014
You could also try these.  I modified them to work on windows 7.

16_Windows98 Plus! Themes for Windows7…
cplemaster Featured By Owner Sep 6, 2014

Please heed my warning, if you do not back up these two registry keys your fonts, font sizes, and window border dimensions will be permanently messed up. Absolutely no warning was listed, and I had no idea this program would actually overwrite system-essential registry keys. Luckily for all of you I have backed up the keys for you and zipped them. They are not system-unique and work on Windows 7 and up. Works on 8 and 8.1 (I have tried it on all 3 systems).

If you installed this and decided you didn't want to use it anymore only to realize your fonts and window borders are unable to be reverted, install both of these registry keys and it will revert them. These are the default WindowMetrics and "Fonts" keys from Windows 7. I repeat, these do work on 8 and 8.1 as well, they are no different.…

Feel free to spread this link, I will keep it up on my dropbox or you can upload it wherever you like.

I get the message "Not enough memory to display other themes" when I launch Themes.exe I can't select a theme from the drop down menu. My only choices from the themes drop down menu are "Current Windows settings" and "Other..." I have 2GB of RAM installed with Dual Intel 1.6ghz processors.

Protip suggestion (if nobody said it before).

Copy the Plus! folder anywhere you prefer. Once in there, open it, right click the themes.exe program, in "compatibility" choose to run it as Windows 98.

That's all. From now on, if you want to change your theme, run theme.exe from there and choose the theme you want.
It works in Windows 7 x64 (the one I'm using right now, hence why I know it works).

Great if you're picky like me and hate to have a stray extra folder in your desktop.
ayacchin-zephirus Featured By Owner Jan 27, 2013  Student Writer you know what? i'm almost cry when i found this. well don't laugh at me, that's because this theme reminds me my old times when i'm using win 98! omg, so nostalgic. ...GREAT WORK!

one question.
What about all of the 95 themes from a,b,and c versions.I had the extra plus disc for win95
but in moving around I lost it.
Thanks and keep up the great work.

This is a great idea, but it could stand a little work. On my machine, a Dell Inspiron running a 64-bit version of Windows 7 Home Edition, it installed the cursors and the sounds (which at least is a start) but not the icons or the wallpaper -- not even when I put the Plus! folder on the desktop. Actually, when I was still using Windows XP, I found a similar program which did the same thing very effectively. Maybe it might be worth while reaching out to the person who wrote that program and finding out exactly how he did it. I know that Windows 7 is quite a bit different from previous iterations, but perhaps there's a way to get this to work more effectively.
GigiNYC Featured By Owner Nov 28, 2011
Ooops...forgot to provide a link to that program.

having trouble getting this to work :(
I can run the THEMES.exe file, and select from the list of themes, but when I click 'Apply' the applet hangs (ie. Program Not Responding). Any ideas?

I have few suggestion for you:

1. Change the name to Windows 98 Plus! theme for Windows 7 (or something like that)

2. Add keyword "Windows 98 Plus! theme Windows 7"

I was searching to add more theme for my group and website, and came across a fake Windows 98 theme (practically with only wallpapers lol). He got a big number of visitors and downloads only for the name.

Very nice idea, thank you for sharing it :) People should know about it.

Thank You so much for this. I just got a new laptop with Windows 7 and really wanted to use the many themes I had made up.

This works so well, even with Win7 64 bit. And best of all, once you apply a theme with the 98 app, you can go to the personalization screen in Win 7 and save it as a Win 7 theme which allows you to use the transparent tool bars and the Wallpaper slide show option.

Again, Thank You so much!!!!
